Biography
Jonathan Wall grew up in the High Desert of Southern California. After receiving a
B.A. in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he went on to study
painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, America's oldest art school.
In the early 1990's he began his career as a painter in Europe. Living across the river
from Lisbon in Portugal, he focused on painting landscapes in the open air. He ended
his stay in Europe in 1995 with a cumulative exhibition in Paris.
Back in California, for the next few years he painted gardens and coastlines.
Searching for ever more exotic locations, he traveled to places like French Polynesia and
Martinique. In 2002 he moved to Cape Cod for a couple of years, then on to China for
a couple more.
In China he met his lovely wife, Jinyan, who is often his muse and model. Her
award-winning dance, the Little Mermaid, is what has inspired him to sometimes put
mermaids in his paintings. In the spring of 2006 they opened their art gallery, Wall Art
Space, in the 798 Art District of Beijing.
Jonathan has also enjoyed teaching over the last couple of years, most recently as
lecturer of western art history at Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Art.
Currently, he and his wife make their home in Santa Barbara, California.
Member of the Santa Barbara Art Association.
